This west coast catamaran cruise sails the calmest water in Mauritius. From Black River you head south past Tamarin Bay and the cliffs of Le Morne to Crystal Rock and Île aux Bénitiers, with one or two snorkel stops and a barbecue lunch cooked on board. It is the best full-day boat trip for anyone staying at Flic en Flac, Tamarin or Le Morne, and the most comfortable one from June to September.
Meet the crew at Black River, a fishing village that is now the main sailing base on the south-west coast. The catamaran leaves in the morning and follows the coast south past Tamarin Bay, with the land rising towards Le Morne Brabant, the basalt mountain at the south-western tip of the island.
The crew keeps a lookout for spinner dolphins, which often rest in these bays, and between July and October for humpback whales on migration.
You stop at Crystal Rock, a lone coral rock standing in open turquoise water, then anchor on the reef for a snorkel. Lunch is cooked on the boat while you swim.
In the afternoon you land on Île aux Bénitiers, a long, flat island covered in palms, with a shallow, clear lagoon around it. After some beach time, you sail back to Black River.
Add a dolphin swim and a beach BBQ with the swim with dolphins and Île aux Bénitiers day, or take the whole boat with the private full-day charter.
BBQ lunch (included): grilled fish and chicken, rice and fresh salads.
Drinks (included): soft drinks, water, beer and local rum.
Vegetarian meals are available if you ask when you book.

Le Morne Brabant became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008. In the 18th and early 19th centuries, escaped slaves hid in caves on its cliffs, and the mountain is now a symbol of the fight against slavery in Mauritius.
From €70 per person for a shared full-day cruise with lunch and drinks.
From Black River on the south-west coast, close to Flic en Flac, Tamarin, La Preneuse and Le Morne.
A long, flat, palm-covered island off the south-west coast, with a shallow, clear lagoon. It is where most west coast cruises stop for lunch and beach time.
A coral rock standing alone in the turquoise lagoon near Île aux Bénitiers. It is one of the most photographed spots in Mauritius.
Often, from the deck. Swimming with them is only allowed before 09:00, so book our dolphin day trip if you want to swim.
It runs all year and is at its best from June to September, when this coast stays calm while the rest of the island is windy.
Neither is better. The west coast has calmer water, Crystal Rock and dolphins. Île aux Cerfs has a bigger lagoon and a waterfall stop. Pick the one closest to your hotel.
