A shared helicopter tour is the easiest way to see Mauritius from the air without paying for the whole aircraft. You book a seat, join up to five other passengers and fly over the island’s most famous sights: the Underwater Waterfall off Le Morne, the coloured earth at Chamarel, the lagoons of the north and the peaks around Port Louis. Choose a short hop from La Villéon in the south-west or a longer flight from Triolet in the north.

Highlights

  • Pay per seat, no need to fill the helicopter yourself
  • The Underwater Waterfall off Le Morne, best seen from the air
  • Le Morne Brabant, a UNESCO World Heritage Site
  • Chamarel’s coloured earth and waterfall
  • Black River Gorges and Île aux Bénitiers on the longer flights
  • North coast lagoons, Coin de Mire and Cap Malheureux from Triolet
  • Large windows on the Airbus H130, so every seat has a view

Full description

From La Villéon (south-west): you check in at La Villéon Adventure Park in the hills near Chamarel. The 15-minute flight takes off over the Chamarel waterfall and coloured earth, crosses the south coast at Macondé and heads out to the Underwater Waterfall and Le Morne, then returns past Îlot Fourneau and the kitesurf lagoon. The 25-minute flight adds the Black River Gorges, Île aux Bénitiers, Crystal Rock and Baie du Cap.

From Triolet (north): you check in at the Triolet helipad, a short drive from Grand Baie and Trou aux Biches. The 25-minute North Tour flies over Grand Baie, Coin de Mire, the red-roofed church at Cap Malheureux, Île d’Ambre and the Labourdonnais estate. The 45-minute West and South Tour crosses Port Louis and the Le Pouce and Pieter Both mountains, then flies over Tamarind Falls, the Black River Gorges, Chamarel, the Underwater Waterfall, Le Morne and Île aux Bénitiers. An East Tour option over Mahébourg, Île aux Aigrettes and Île aux Cerfs is also possible.

The pilot talks you through what you’re seeing on the headsets. After landing, you are back at the helipad lounge for a coffee.

If fifteen minutes is enough, the underwater waterfall helicopter tour is the shortest flight we book, and the ultimate 75-minute tour circles the whole island.

What to bring

  • Passport or ID card (it is checked at the helipad)
  • Camera or phone (short lenses only, long lenses are not allowed)
  • Sunglasses
  • Dark clothes, which cut down reflections on the window in your photos

Important information

  • We need the exact weight of each passenger when you book. If a weight on the day is different, the pilot may refuse the flight and it will not be refunded.
  • We also need each passenger’s full name, nationality, passport number, date of birth and gender.
  • Shared flights need at least 4 passengers. If a flight isn’t full enough, we move you to the next available slot.
  • Arrive on time. If you are more than 15 minutes late, the flight is charged in full.
  • The Underwater Waterfall is a natural effect and can be harder to see on cloudy days or with a rough sea. Flights are not refunded if it is not visible.
  • Children from 2 years can fly. Children under 12 must fly with an adult. Babies are not accepted on La Villéon flights.
  • No smoking, food or drinks on board.
  • Flights depend on the weather and the pilot’s decision. If the flight is cancelled, you can rebook or get a full refund.

Hotel transfers

We can take you from your hotel to the helipad and back. Our drivers are local and speak English and French, with cars for 4, 6 or 12 people. The price depends on how far your hotel is from Triolet or La Villéon.

Did you know?

The Underwater Waterfall is an optical illusion. Sand and silt on the seabed off Le Morne slide down a steep underwater shelf, and from above it looks like the sea itself is pouring into a hole. You can only see the full effect from the air.

Make it special (optional extras)

  • Book the whole helicopter: see our Private Helicopter Tour Mauritius
  • Combine with a Chamarel day: fly from La Villéon, then visit the Seven Coloured Earth and the rum distillery by car
  • Photo package: ask if the helipad offers a flight video on the day
  • Gift voucher: a flight makes a strong birthday or anniversary present
