This private tour takes your group out of Black River on a speedboat to swim with wild dolphins in the morning, then heads further offshore to look for whales. Sperm whales live off the west coast all year, and humpback whales pass through from July to October. With the boat to yourselves, the skipper can spend the time where the animals are rather than keeping to a group timetable.
Meet your skipper at Black River 15 minutes before departure. After a safety briefing, the speedboat heads along the coast towards the bays where dolphins rest in the early morning. When the skipper finds a pod, small groups enter the water quietly and swim alongside them, with the skipper and a life-saver watching from the boat.
After the dolphins, the boat moves further out to deep water to look for whales. The drop-off here is steep, which is why sperm whales feed close to this coast. Between July and October, you may also see humpback whales, sometimes with calves. Whales are watched from the boat only.
On the way back, you stop in the lagoon to snorkel over the reef, and if conditions are good, pass Crystal Rock for photos before returning to Black River.
For a calmer morning, the private half-day catamaran with dolphins and snorkelling stays closer to the lagoon, while the shared dolphin and whale watching trip is the cheaper way to see the same animals.
Water and soft drinks are included. Bring a snack if you are leaving at 05:00, as the tour ends before lunch.

Scientists working off the west coast keep a photo catalogue of the local sperm whales, identified by the shape of their tail flukes. They live in family groups led by females, and the same families are seen here year after year.
