The Magic of Île aux Aigrettes
Your first destination is Île aux Aigrettes, a small coral island that serves as a living museum of what Mauritius looked like before human settlement. A short boat ride takes you from the lagoon shore to this protected sanctuary. Here, you will meet rare endemic species such as the Pink Pigeon, the Mauritius Fody, and the vividly colored day gecko. The highlight for many visitors is the opportunity to walk among the roaming Aldabra giant tortoises, some of which are over a century old, as they traverse the restored native forest.
Exploring Ebony Forest
The second leg of the tour brings you to the stunning Ebony Forest in the South West. Upon arrival, you will be introduced to the island’s fascinating natural history at the Visitor Centre museum. The exploration then takes to the trails and raised walkways, including the Flycatcher Walkway, which lifts you high above the forest floor. From here, you can spot the elusive Mauritius Paradise Flycatcher and the Echo Parakeet while enjoying spectacular aerial views of the surrounding landscape.
Panoramic Views and Conservation
A key highlight of the Ebony Forest experience is Sublime Point, a breathtaking vantage point that offers sweeping panoramic views of Le Morne Brabant and the Indian Ocean. Throughout the day, your guide will share insights into the critical conservation programs that are saving these species from extinction. Your participation in the Endemic Mauritius Nature Tour directly supports these vital ecological restoration efforts.
