The site is a unique geological formation in the Chamarel plain of the Rivière Noire District. The colourful dunes were formed through the decomposition of volcanic rock into clay and ferrallitic soil over time. The landscape reveals vivid natural shades of red, brown, violet, green, blue, purple, and yellow, creating an effect unlike anywhere else on the island.
Even when the coloured sands are mixed together, they gradually settle back into separate layers. This striking natural behaviour, along with the site’s scientific and visual importance, has made Chamarel Seven Colored Earth one of Mauritius’ signature attractions.
